Records & Research

Paul (Poul) Olsen, born 1822 in Søndre Fron (Sør-Fron), Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, was a farmer/property owner and tailor who lived at the farm "Haverstad eller Snedkerpladsen" (Snidkerplatsen) in Sør-Fron. He was married to Embjør Iversdatter and they had children including Mari, Iver, Ole, Ronnøg, and John. He died 3 March 1885 and was recorded in the Sør-Fron parish burial register. Identity is confirmed across four independent primary records in the Norwegian National Archives (Digitalarkivet): the 1865 census (farm, spouse, and five children all matching), the 1875 census (birth year 1822 + distinctive farm name), and the 1885 Sør-Fron parish death/burial register (birth year 1822 + exact death date 1885-03-03). The death record was directly inspected during this audit and confirms the match.

Open questions (6)
  • The known facts list two daughters named Ronnoug Paulsdater (1858 and 1860) plus daughters Berte (1865) and Oline (1869); the 1865 census shows one 'Ronnøg Poulsdatter' (age 6, b.~1859) and does not yet include Berte or Oline. The 1875 census household (not fully fetched) and parish baptism records should confirm/clarify the two Ronnoug entries and the later-born daughters.
  • Confirm the 1850-10-16 marriage of Paul Olsen and Embjør Iversdatter in the Sør-Fron parish marriage register (1849-1863 ministerial book, 0519P) — the marriage entry itself has not been directly viewed.
  • Verify parents Ole Iversen (1781-1861) and Lisbet Olsdatter (1785) via Paul Olsen's baptism record (~1822) and his marriage record's named father — no record yet ties these parents to this Paul.
  • Confirm Embjør Iversdatter's death (known: 1905) in the Sør-Fron parish death register.
  • The 'Fronske company' military roll entry for a Poul Olsen b.1822 is a single-anchor, common-name lead and needs a second anchor (residence or patronymic) before it can be tied to this individual; otherwise it should be dropped.
  • Reconcile birthplace 'Stannes' (1885 death register) with the report's residence/farm history at Snidkerplatsen, Haverstad, Djupdalen, and Vendalen — 'Stannes' may be the farm of his birth, distinct from where he later lived.
