Notes & Recollections

He bought Haverstad in 1837. His father lived on Prestigards-Vangen, and this family lived there for several years. Their son, Ole Iversen, died on 18750312 and, thus, did not inherit the farm.

Records & Research

Iver Olsen (b. ca. 1801) is confirmed in the 1865 Norwegian census as a landowning farmer (Gaardbruger Selveier) and head of household ('Huusf') at the Haverstad farm in Søndre Langlien district, Sør-Fron (Søndre Fron) parish, Oppland — the very farm the family report says he bought in 1837. The 1865 Haverstad household (verified by direct fetch of the census record) lists his wife Ragnild Knudsdatter (age 65), son Ole Iversen (age 35, b. ca. 1831), and daughters whose names and ages match the report: Mari Iversdatter (age 24, b. ca. 1842) and 'Karn' [Karen] Iversdatter (age 20, b. ca. 1846), plus a lodging daughter Kari Iversdatter (age 27). The combination of spouse name, multiple matching children, the Haverstad farm, and Selveier (landowner) status makes the identity unambiguous. He was still living on 31 Dec 1865 at age 64, establishing a death after 1865. Census records show all household members' birthplace as 'Søndre Froens Prgj.' (Sør-Fron parish); whether Iver was actually born in Sør-Fron or in Vågå (where the report implies the family lived at the prestegard in his youth) is unresolved.

  • Iver Olsen, born ca. 1801 (census-calculated 1802), is recorded in the 31 Dec 1865 census as head of household ('Huusf') and a landowning farmer ('Gaardb Selveier') at the Haverstad farm, Søndre Langlien district (003), rural residence 0036 Haverstad, Sør-Fron (Søndre Fron) parish (0519P), Oppland. This is the farm the report states he bought in 1837, and his landowner status is consistent with that purchase. Verified by direct fetch of the census person record.

  • His wife in the 1865 Haverstad household is Ragnild Knudsdatter (b. ca. 1801, age 65), listed as 'hans Kone' (his wife). This matches the report's spouse Ragnhild Knutsdater (1801–1875). Verified in the fetched household roster.

  • Son Ole Iversen (b. ca. 1831, age 35), listed as 'deres Søn' (their son) and 'hjelper Faderen med Gaardsbrug', is present in the 1865 Haverstad household. This matches the report's son Ole Iversen (b. 1831), who the report says died 18 Mar 1875 and therefore did not inherit the farm. His being alive in 1865 is consistent with a death in 1875. Verified in the fetched roster.

  • Daughters Mari Iversdatter (b. ca. 1842, age 24, 'deres Datter', occupation Skredder) and 'Karn' [Karen] Iversdatter (b. ca. 1846, age 20, 'hjelper sin Fader med hans Huusholdning') are present in the 1865 Haverstad household, matching the report's Mari Iversdater (1842) and Karen Iversdater (1846). A further daughter, Kari Iversdatter (age 27, 'deres Datter Logerende' — lodging daughter, occupation Skredder), is also listed. All confirmed in the fetched household roster.

  • Iver Olsen was still living at age 64 on 31 December 1865, which establishes that his death occurred after 1865 (the report gives no death date).

Open questions (7)
  • Exact death date and burial place of Iver Olsen — confirmed living in 1865; death record (Sør-Fron parish burial register, Digitalarkivet) not yet located.
  • Iver's actual birthplace: the 1865 census says Sør-Fron for every household member, but the report implies the family was at Vågå prestegard (Prestgardsvangen) in his youth. A Vågå/Sør-Fron baptism record (c. 1801) would resolve this and confirm parents Ole Hansen and Embjør Olsdatter — neither parent is independently confirmed by any source consulted.
  • Primary record of the 1828-04-28 marriage of Iver Olsen and Ragnhild Knutsdatter (parish marriage register) not yet located; would independently confirm the marriage date and place.
  • Direct documentation of the 1837 purchase of Haverstad (Sør-Fron land/deed or bygdebok entry) not yet located; landowner ('Selveier') status in 1865 is consistent with it but is not a direct deed citation.
  • Children Embjor Iversdater (1828), Anne Iversdater (1830), Anne Iversdater (1834) from the report were NOT found in the 1865 Haverstad household (likely married/moved out or deceased by 1865); only Ole, Kari, Mari, and Karn/Karen were co-resident.
  • Identity of the lodging daughter 'Kari Iversdatter' (age 27, b. ca. 1838, listed as 'deres Datter Logerende'): she is recorded as their daughter but does not match any birth year in the report's child list (the report has no ~1838 child); needs further record work to determine whether she is an unlisted child or one of the report's 'Anne' entries.
  • The Vågå Historielag 'Taulstad' reference confirms only the place 'Haverstad i sør-Fron', not this individual — it should not be read as personal documentation of Iver Olsen.
