Records & Research
Hosea Throop (b. 24 Jul 1806) was a son of Thomas Billings Throop (b. 1771) and Catherine Walker. Public genealogical sources do not directly document Hosea himself. The printed Throop genealogy independently corroborates his father as "Thomas Billings Throope, b. 1771, of Middleburg and Hanover, N.Y., and Algonquin, Ill.," matching the family report's father by name and birth year and adding his residences; however, the book does not enumerate that man's children, so Hosea is not described there. No record of Hosea's own death, burial, marriage, or children was located, and his mother Catherine Walker could not be independently verified. A speculative association with an "H. B. Throop" who settled Algonquin Township, McHenry Co., IL in 1839 was removed because the identity cannot be tied to Hosea (the initials do not match the subject or his father, and no birth/parentage data links the record to this person).

Hosea's father is independently corroborated as 'Thomas Billings Throope, b. 1771, of Middleburg and Hanover, N.Y., and Algonquin, Ill.' in the printed Throop genealogy, matching the family report's father by name and birth year and adding his places of residence. This corroborates the parentage anchor only; the source does not document Hosea himself.
Open questions (7)
- No online record (FindAGrave, FamilySearch Tree, WikiTree, Geni, BillionGraves) directly documents Hosea Throop born 24 Jul 1806; his death date, burial place, spouse, and children remain unknown.
- Hosea's mother Catherine Walker (b. 1776) could not be independently verified in any public source consulted.
- Birthplace of Hosea is unrecorded; given the father's residences, it was plausibly Middleburg/Hanover (Schoharie Co.), New York, but this is not confirmed by any source.
- REMOVED FINDING: The prior 'H. B. Throop settled Section 10, Algonquin Township, McHenry Co., IL in 1839 (several-time County Commissioner)' finding was removed as a wrong-person / unestablished match. Its initials ('H. B.') do not match Hosea (no documented middle initial) nor his father Thomas Billings Throop (T.B.), and the record carries no birth date or parentage to tie it to this person. It establishes neither Hosea nor the family with sufficient identity confidence and was speculative.
- The 1877 McHenry directory also names a separate 'Billings Throop, of Hartland, Windsor Co., Vt.' (father of Kate A. Throop, who m. surveyor John Brink in 1840); relationship, if any, to Thomas Billings Throop (1771) is unclear and unverified.
- Could not access the FamilySearch shared tree results (require sign-in/JavaScript) to look for an existing Hosea Throop profile linked to Thomas Billings Throop and Catherine Walker.
- The cited Throop genealogy PDF triggers a file download rather than rendering as text, so the exact quote corroborating the father could not be independently re-confirmed during this audit; it is retained on the strength of the quoted passage with no detected conflict against the known facts.
